Ayran is a yoghurt based beverage. Although there is no evidence to the origins of ayran, it is believed to have originated in the Southern Anatolian region of Turkey. Additionally, it is believed that ayran was created as a method to preserve yogurt with salt. Ayran is made from 4 parts yoghurt, 1 part water and salt to taste. Ayran is commonly served along side spicy meat dishes. In the hot summer months, the refreshing beverage is consumed icy cold.
