Description

Topkapı Palace (Seraglio)

Topkapı Palace (or the Seraglio) is a large museum located in Istanbul, Turkey. For more than 400 years, it served as the main residence and administrative headquarters for the Ottoman Sultans. Commissioned by Mehmed the Conqueror following the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, construction of the palace began in 1460 with completion in 1478. Topkapı Palace was abandoned by the Ottoman Dynasty when the official royal residence was moved to the Dolmabahçe Palace in 1856. Topkapı Palace was designated as a museum on April 3, 1924 making it the first museum of the newly formed Turkish Republic.

Istanbul, Turkey

Alphonse de Lamartine wrote, “If one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze on Istanbul.” Istanbul, once known as Constantinople, is the only city in the world to straddle two continents: Europe and Asia. Over the last 2000 years, it has also been the capital of three empires: Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman. Divided by the Bosphorus Strait, today Istanbul is home to over 15 million residents. Istanbul is a study of contrast: ancient and modern; conservative and progressive; chaotic and relaxed. With a rich history and warm culture, it is one of the most inspiring cities in the world.
