Marmara Sea | Istanbul, Turkey
Marmara Sea, historically known as Propontis, is an inland sea that partially separates the Asian and European parts of Turkey. It is connected to the Bosporus and the Black Sea to the northeast. To the southwest, it is connected to the Dardanelles and the Aegean Sea. The Marmara was formed as a result of crustal movements that occurred about 2.5 million years ago and remains an area of frequent earthquakes.
Marmara is a derivation of the Greek word ‘marmaros’ meaning marble. The sea is home to distinct groups of islands: the Kızıl Islands to the north and the Marmara Islands to the south. The Marmara Islands are home to granite, slate, and marble deposits that have been quarried since antiquity.
