Four Seasons Hotel | Istanbul, Turkey
Four Seasons Hotel Sultanahmet is located in what once was a prison. Sultanahmet Prison (Sultanahmet Cezaevi in Turkish) began construction in 1918 adjacent to the city courthouse. Many famous artists and political figures were detained at the location including communist leader Mihri Belli, novelist Orhan Kemal and author Aziz Nesin. Many of the elements from the original prison structure remain in the hotel including hand-painted tiles, original wooden doors and marble pillars. The landscaped courtyard once served an exercise yard.
