Cucumber originated in India where they once grew wild. Between 2,000 and 3,000 BC, the Indian population domesticated the cucumber and began adding the vegetable to their cuisine. More than a thousand years later, they started trading cucumbers with Middle Eastern and Europe. During Roman Empire, cucumbers reached Turkey. Today, Turkey is the second largest producer of cucumbers worldwide.
In Turkey, cucumber is eaten fresh and pickled. Fresh cucumber, yoghurt and herbs are used in a traditional salad called cacık
