Turkey is the second largest producer of apples in Europe and the fourth largest in the world. The diverse geographic regions allow for production of over 450 different varieties. However, only ten varieties are sold commercially. Nearly half of the apples grown in Turkey are Red Delicious. Additionally, about one third of the apples cultivated are Golden Delicious. Amasya is the most popular local variety and represents about 10 percent of total annual production. Apples are primarily cultivated in the Central Anatolian and Northern Mediterranean regions of the country. Freshly picked apples are available from September to May. Red Delicious apples are in season beginning in late September and October. Golden Delicious apples are in season in November.
Apples are eaten freshly picked, baked or dried. Dried apples are used to make apple tea. Dried apples are steeped in boiling water until the tea is the desired strength. Before serving, the rehydrated apples are strained from the brew.
