Hazelnut | Fındık
Hazelnut (fındık) has been cultivated in Turkey’s Black Sea Region for more than 2,300 years. Additionally, Turkey has been exporting hazelnuts for over six hundred years. Today, roughly 75% of the world’s hazelnut supply is grown in Turkey with nearly one-third coming from the Black Sea city of Ordu. The majority of hazelnuts cultivated in Turkey are exported as a key ingredient in pralines, chocolate spread and other food products. Nutella, the maker of the world famous chocolate spread, utilizes 25% of world supply of hazelnuts. Within Turkey, hazelnuts are consumed roasted and in desserts including pastries and ice-cream. Hazelnuts ripen in August and September. Dried and roasted hazelnuts are available all year.
