Ara Güler (1928 – 2018), known as the Eye of Istanbul, was the most important Turkish photojournalist of his generation. Güler is best known for capturing nostalgic images of everyday life in Istanbul. In 1958, when Time-Life opened the first Turkish branch, Güler became the initial correspondent. His work has been exhibited in collections worldwide. Notable institutions include Museum of Modern Art New York, National Library of France, George Eastman Museum, Museum Ludwig Köln and Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery. Additionally, he was a recipient of France’s Légion d’Honneur. Today, his work can be seen at the Ara Güler Museum.
