Manisa Province is home to Mount Sipylus National Park (Spil Dağı Milli Parkı), a richly forested area known for thermal hot springs, the famous “crying rock” of Niobe, and a Hittite carving of the mother-goddess Cybele. Manisa has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Sardis (in the present-day municipality of Salihli) was the ancient capital of Lydia, once ruled by King Croesus, who was renowned for his wealth and credited with minting the first coin. Akhisar, the ancient city of Thyatira, was one of the Seven Churches of the Book of Revelation. The remains of the ancient city are found in Tepe Mezarlığı. The city of Alaşehir is home to remains of the ancient city of Philadelphia, another of the Seven Churches.

The mild climate and rich soil make the Aegean one of Turkey’s most fertile regions. Known for olive orchards and vineyards, the Aegean Region produces some of Turkey’s most prestigious olive oils and wines.
